How to Get Grease Out of Clothing

Grease is stubborn stain to get out of clothing. In a regular wash, the dirty, black part of the stain may be removed easily, but the darker-looking spot may remain. Pre-treating can help to prevent the permanent staining of the garment.

Instructions

Fresh Stains

  1. Place a few drops of hand dish-washing soap on the stain. Dish-washing soap that is advertised as a formula for cutting through grease works best. Rub the fabric together lightly to distribute evenly.
  2. Dampen a sponge in warm water. Rub the soap into the stain gently, in a circular motion, saturating the stain to the edges and through to the back of the fabric.
  3. Allow the clothing to sit and pre-treat for as long as possible. Leaving the garment overnight is best, but the dish soap should cut through the stain in less than a few hours.
  4. Start the washer on the warm temperature and small-sized load settings. Allow the washer to fill completely and add 1/4 cup of all-purpose cleaner. Add the clothing. Wash the garment separately to prevent any damage or leaching of stains to other clothing in the wash. Do not dry.
  5. Wash again using typical laundry detergent. This will remove any residue of the soap or stain. Older, Set-in Stains
  6. Treat the area with a small amount of oven cleaner. Saturate through the clothing, soaking through to the back of the fabric.
  7. Dampen the sponge and work the cleaner into the stain well. Scrub lightly from edge to edge.
  8. Allow the cleaner to sit on the stain for around 15 minutes. Oven cleaner is strong and could damage clothes if left on fabric too long before washing. Set a timer to prevent over-saturation and damage to the fabric.
  9. Start the washer on the warm temperature and small-sized load settings. Allow the washer to fill completely and add 1/4 cup of all purpose cleaner. Add the soiled clothing.
  10. Wash the garment separately to prevent any damage or leaching in the process of washing. Wash it again with standard laundry detergent to remove any cleaning product residue.

Diets for a Pear-Shaped Body

According to Marie Savard, M.D., author of the weight loss book “Apples & Pears: The Body Shape Solution for Weight Loss and Wellness,” body shape is the most powerful predictor of human health. Women with pear-shaped bodies gain weight on the hips and thighs, while their upper bodies remain slim. This is good news, in a way. Both men and women with apple-shaped bodies, who gain significant weight around the belly, are at greater risk for developing heart disease, diabetes and cancer, according to diet experts.

Determining Your Shape

If you are not sure whether you are apple-shaped or pear-shaped, there is a quick way to tell. Take a tape measure and place it around your waist. Record the figure. Then measure your hips. Divide the waist measurement number by the hip measurement number. If the total is 0.8 or lower, you have a pear-shaped body, meaning that you carry more fat around your hips and thighs. If you are pear-shaped, you’ll use a different strategy to lose weight than an apple-shaped person.

What Fat Deposits Mean

It’s important to note that people with pear-shaped bodies, who carry fat around their hips and thighs, store fat more shallowly than the deeper, visceral abdominal fat that accumulates around the organs of apple-shaped people. This means that the fat is doing less harm on your body and you will have fewer health risks. People with pear shapes simply have a different physical chemistry, hormone production and metabolism than apple-shaped folks, which means that they are at less risk for obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease and certain cancers. In fact, Dr. Savard believes that pear-zone fat is passive and actually protects against heart disease. However, pear-shaped women are prone to osteoporosis, varicose veins and cellulite and tend to have more difficulty losing weight in general.

Butter’s a no-no for pear-shaped dieters, who tend to crave salty foods.

On her website, Dr. Savard recommends that pear-shaped dieters should stick with complex carbohydrates like green vegetables and whole grains. Eat low fat; aim to get about 20 percent of your diet from healthy fats like salmon, almonds and flax seed, and use olive and canola oils. Moderate protein intake is recommended, such as chicken and lamb. Vegetarians can get their protein from brown rice, spinach, oats, lentils and black beans. The worst foods for this body type, according to Dr. Savard, are cheese, butter and salty foods. She recommends taking a calcium supplement, since osteoporosis is a risk later in life.

According to Savard, resistance training with free weights three times per week to stave off bone loss is recommended. This will also increase your metabolic rate and burn that pesky fat off over time. Approach dieting and exercise with a little less anxiety, as your excess weight is less likely to be harming you. However, post-menopausal pear-shaped women can start to experience some of the same health problems as apple-shaped women. And pear-shaped women of all ages feel self-conscious about their large buttocks and thighs, so they suffer from more eating disorders than apple-shaped women do.

  4. Do lunges, which will work out all of the muscles in your lower body. You can do this while holding hand weights or a dumbbell, placed on your shoulders, behind your neck.
  5. Lose butt fat by doing squats–lots of them. To see results sooner, hold a 5-pound weight in each hand while squatting.

  1. Get on your hands and knees and bring your left knee up to your chest and then extend it as far behind you as you can. Lifting your leg toward the ceiling once the leg is fully extended will work out your butt muscles even more. Do this on the right side as well.
  2. Try to slim down fat ankles or “cankles,” which may be your genetic predisposition. You may have the tendency to store fat in your lower legs. Fat ankles also can be the result of edema, tendinitis or water retention. You may or may not succeed in losing the fat on your ankles. Consider doing kickboxing or other activities that bulk up your calves and minimize thick ankles.
  3. Do yoga. Yoga tones and sculpts the entire body while helping you burn fat and lose weight. Yoga improves posture and straightens your spine, which makes you look taller and thinner.
